Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla Inc., has recently expressed his preference to build artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics products elsewhere if he does not have significant voting control within Tesla. While he remains the majority shareholder of the company with a stake close to 13%, Musk sold approximately $40 billion in stock in 2022 to acquire Twitter, further strengthening his interests in other ventures.

Musk has praised Tesla’s board of directors and stated that they expected a decision from Judge Kathaleen St. J. McCormick of the Delaware Chancery Court before preparing another compensation plan. This comes in response to a Tesla shareholder’s claim that the board did not show independence from Musk when designing his $55 billion performance award in 2018.

Despite Musk’s loyalty to Tesla being evident, he is facing considerable pressure due to the automotive manufacturer’s rocky start this year. Tesla has lost $94 billion in market value due to slow growth and reduced profit margins. Additionally, Musk is addressing concerns raised by executives and directors of his companies, including Tesla, regarding his alleged drug use, which recently became public.

Despite these challenges, Musk’s vision for Tesla extends beyond the realm of automobiles. The company has introduced features such as Autopilot and Full Self-Driving, both driver-assistance technologies, and has also been actively developing a humanoid robot named Optimus. Musk has emphasized Tesla’s position as a leader in AI and robotics, showcasing the company’s capabilities during Tesla’s inaugural AI Day in August 2021.

To further solidify Tesla’s position in the AI industry, Musk announced the creation of xAI, a startup aimed at competing with established players like Microsoft’s OpenAI and Google’s Deepmind. While some analysts question the potential overlap with Tesla’s existing AI efforts, Musk believes the new company will enhance the value of the automaker’s AI initiatives.

However, some critics argue that Musk’s recent behavior and choice of words may not be beneficial for his companies. Daniel Kollar, the head of the automotive and mobility practice at consultancy firm Intralink, suggests that if Tesla is not primarily an AI company, Musk’s focus on building AI and robotics products elsewhere raises concerns. However, he acknowledges that if Tesla does not position itself as an AI company, establishing a new venture could be a plausible option.

In summary, Elon Musk’s interest in AI and robotics drives him to explore new opportunities beyond Tesla. Despite facing challenges in the automotive industry, Musk continues to pursue his vision of making Tesla a leader in AI and robotics. Only time will tell how these innovations will shape the future of both Tesla and his other ventures.
